Nigerian cuisine consists of dishes or food items from the hundreds of ethnic groups that comprise Nigeria. Most of the animals on this list are kept as pets, but in Nigeria, they’re killed and eaten. am sure me and you are one of them.

Here are some of the weirdest animals that Nigerians eat.

1. Dogs

The domestic dog is a member of genus Canis that forms part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant carnivore.

Dog eating in Nigeria is popular among Calabar people, and Dog meat is usually referred to as 404. In Nigeria, a dog can be man’s best friend and man’s best meal.

2. Lizards

Lizards are a widespread group of squamate reptiles, with over 6,000 species, ranging across all continents except Antarctica, as well as most oceanic island chains. The group is paraphyletic as it excludes the snakes which are also squamates

Believe it or not, some people enjoy eating lizards, while some use it as herb mixtures.

3. Snakes

Snakes are elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes. Like all squamates, snakes are ectothermic, amniote vertebrates covered in overlapping scales.

Snakes might be seen as venomous animals that should be avoided, but it a real delicacy in Nigeria.

4. Frogs

A frog is any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura.

The frogs are coated with pepper and roasted. Am telling you now, try frog suya and eel the delicious taste.

5. Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers are insects of the suborder Caelifera within the order Orthoptera, which includes crickets and katydids. They are sometimes referred to as short-horned grasshoppers to distinguish them from the katydids, which have much longer antennae.

Apparently, grasshoppers taste really nice when they’re roasted.

6. Crocodiles

Crocodiles or true crocodiles are large aquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Crocodylinae, all of whose members are considered true crocodiles, is classified as a biological subfamily.

In Nigeria crocodile is a delicious meat.

7. Bat

Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera whose forelimbs form webbed wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight.

It is allegde that the people of Ijebu enjoy eating bats.

8. Tortoise

Tortoises are a family, Testudinidae, of land-dwelling reptiles in the order Testudines. Tortoises are shielded from predators by a shell.

Though i don’t know how they prepare tortise meat, some Nigerians find it yummy.
How do they even get it out of the shell?

9. Cats

The domestic cat is a small, typically furry, carnivorous mammal. They are often called house cats when kept as indoor pets or simply cats when there is no need to distinguish them from other felids and felines.

Cats are supposed to have 9 lives, but in Nigeria, they are eaten.

Supersciuos has it that, cat must be killed without amking a single cry orelse the slaughther mother will die. i know u asking what if the slaughter mother is already dead? well that is the question i can’t answer.

10. Monkey

Monkeys are haplorhine primates, a group generally possessing tails and consisting of about 260 known living species. There are two distinct lineages of monkeys: New World Monkeys and catarrhines.

Apparently, a lot of people enjoy eating roasted monkeys.
